Microcephaly means that the fetus is smaller than the normally head. (Normally 2 or 3 standard deviations below) There is disproportion between the forehead and the face, the forehead is flattened, the brain is small. Ventriculomegaly can be accompanied.
Microcephaly may develop due to several causes, such as some genetic diseases (trisomy 13, 18), infections (CMV, Zika, Toxoplasma), radiation effects, mother alcohol use and some maternal diseases.
It is not so obvious to diagnose microcephaly and various conditions such as the proportion of other organs of the body and whether or not it is a growth deficiency can create confusion.
In fetuses who detect microcephaly, mental retardation may develop. But not all of these fetuses are intelligent, and there is a wide range of data on how intelligence strains have evolved. Excessive microcephaly and accompanying other anomalies get worse prognosis.
