Dangers and Risks of Labor Induction

Does labor induction have any harm to the pregnant and baby?

The investigations have shown that if induction of labor is performed at appropriate births and if necessary follow-up exercises are performed, it does not cause any significant harm or risk to the pregnant or baby. For this reason, oxytocin is widely used nowadays in suitable births. Some newly developed drugs that have not yet been approved for their safety, harm, or risk are not approved and further research is needed to make them widely available.

Risks of Labor Induction

Side effects and risks of oxytocin, the most commonly used method for induction of labor:
– Tachycardia and hyperstimulation
Fetal distress
– Fast birth (partus precipitatus)
– Failed induction
– Hypotension (given as an intravenous bolus)
– If administered in high doses it may have anti-diuretic effect
– Hyponatremia (if given with sodium-poor liquids)
– There are studies in the newborn that indicate that the baby increases bilirubin height, but in some studies it has not been shown.
– Improper cervix (cervix) may cause an increase in cesarean section especially in first pregnancy.
