What is preterm birth?

Pregnancy is a process that results in labor at the end of 40 weeks. Premature birth is called birth before the 36th gestational week. Babies born before the due date are called premature babies. Approximately 8% of all pregnancies result in premature birth.
The factors that cause preterm births or a large part of the risk of preterm births are unknown. However, some conditions that occur during pregnancy may play an active role in the risk of preterm birth. In particular, it has been found that certain conditions increase the risk of preterm birth.

What causes premature birth?

Infection (urinary tract infections)

What are the symptoms of preterm birth?

The onset of premature birth occurs with various symptoms that the mother may notice, primarily uterine contractions. In particular, each expectant mother should be aware of these symptoms against the threat of preterm birth. In order for premature birth to take place, as in normal birth, strong uterine contractions must be present.

When the contraction occurs, the cervix is ​​opened and labor is started. While the mothers are experiencing pain due to contractions, some mothers may not experience any pain. Therefore, taking into consideration other symptoms of preterm labor becomes important in terms of risk.

A feeling of fullness in the pelvis
Cramp-like pain reminiscent of menstrual pain
Low back pain despite changing position
Increased vaginal discharge or watery, bloody and intense amount
Intestinal cramps with diarrhea

If any of these symptoms occur, it is necessary to check for uterine contractions. These symptoms do not refer to preterm birth without uterine contractions. However, in case of any of the symptoms, uterine contractions cannot be felt, it is recommended to consult a doctor.

How are uterine contractions understood by the mother?

In order for the mother to detect uterine contractions in the face of the threat of premature birth, it is sufficient to gently touch the palm of her hand to her abdomen. Under the palm of the uterus a feeling of gathering may mean uterine contraction. There is no need for pain. It is important to measure only the frequency and duration of contraction. In case of contractions occurring four times an hour or more, the doctor must be notified.


What can be done to prevent preterm labor threat and preterm labor?

During pregnancy, the mother should regularly go to pregnancy check-ups and other obstetric complications such as preterm birth should not be interrupted in order to diagnose and eliminate them. Pre-detection and treatment of anemia, urinary tract infections, cervix and vaginal infections will reduce the risk of preterm birth. In addition, in the case of identified risky pregnancies, the mother should go to the doctor’s controls more frequently.
